Welding and Art

06.13.2012

Fronius equipment is used in a restoration project of steel art sculptures.

John Chamberlain, the Artist of Auto Metal, was known for creating large sculptures using automobile parts. Over the years his works have been showcased at museums around the globe.

Through each move and the weight of the sculptures themselves, the pieces would shift a bit. With a generous grant and a team at The Menil Collection, restoration has started on 12 of Chamberlains pieces which are held by Menil.

When these pieces were originally created they were splattered with paint and then welded over. This would cause it to bubble up creating a very unique quality.

The goal was to preserve the artwork and recreate the look all while giving it sturdy welds. With the help of Guido Schindler (Houston based metal craftsman) and a Fronius TIG system in hand, the Menil team was able to accomplish this task. The result was a balance of art and craft giving the original “sloppy” but now sturdy weld.
